Up until about 25 years ago, the town of Lake Nona was mainly farmland and fields. The first signs of massive growth was the construction of the Lake Nona Golf and Country Club. This gated community features estate homes anchored around the golf course. Housing developments then began popping up and Lake Nona is one of the fastest growing areas in Orange County.
When the Tavistock group purchased 7000 acres in 1996 they put a master plan into development. A downtown area began development, along with a “Medical City”, an area that includes Nemours Children’s Hospital, a new VA Hospital and research centers for the University of Florida
and the University of Central Florida.
Although still under development, the downtown Lake Nona area is an impressive blend of architecture and community services. An open pedestrian area is surrounded by restaurant and shops and Boxi Park provides live entertainment and recreation with restaurants serving from repurposed
shipping containers. A new 60 acre Disney Regional Campus was recently announced, bringing more than 2,000 Cast Members from California to Lake Nona, increasing the number of Disney Cast Members that will live in the area.
Lake Nona also has a Sports and Performance District that is the home of the U.S. Tennis Association, the Johnson and Johnson Human Performance Institute and the Lake Nona Performance Club. With golf, beach volleyball courts, an Adventure Park and hiking and biking trails, Lake Nona
has many choices for the active adult.
And the area continues to grow. It seems like annually there is news of Tavistock buying more land in the area and announcing new projects. Being near Disney, only minutes from the Orlando International Airport and 45 minutes from the cruise ships and beaches, Lake Nona will continue to be a draw for new residents.
